WE CANT BELIEVE JUNE IS TOMORROW! HOW?? Anyway, as we approach the midpoint of 2024, we wanted to look at how the recruitment industry continues to evolve. Here at Placing Faces, we’ve noticed significant shifts in employment patterns and working set-ups. This month’s blog delves into these changes, and we’ll be sharing some actionable tips for both employers and job seekers. Understanding these developments is essential for success in this crazy-competitive environment!

The Rise of In-House Training and Selective Hiring

One of the most notable trends in 2024 has been the increase in employed positions, accompanied by a shift towards more in-office work. While hybrid working arrangements previously meant two to three days of remote work per week, it now typically means just one day. This change is largely driven by a renewed focus on productivity following a challenging 2023.

Why the Shift?

The past year was a period of survival and adaptation for many businesses. Companies that navigated the economic uncertainties are now prioritising stability and efficiency. As a result, employers are more comfortable with hiring but are becoming increasingly selective. This cautious approach is aimed at ensuring that new hires receive robust in-house training and can seamlessly integrate into existing teams.

Investing in comprehensive in-house training programs allows employers to equip their teams with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles. This focus on training not only enhances productivity but also fosters a cohesive and skilled workforce.

Hybrid Work: A New Definition

Hybrid working has evolved significantly over the past year. What once meant several days of remote work now typically involves just one day at home. Employers have found that having employees in the office more frequently enhances collaboration, communication, and overall productivity.

The Benefits of More Office Time…

However, it’s important to strike a balance – everyone needs this! Offering flexibility where possible can still be beneficial for employee morale and retention. For strategies on maintaining flexibility while increasing office time, see our guide to managing hybrid work effectively.

The New Normal in Recruitment

With a focus on stability and productivity, companies are taking fewer risks with new hires. This means they are more selective, seeking candidates who not only have the right skills but also fit well with the company culture and values.

Tips for Employers:

  1. Be Flexible: Where you can, try to be accommodating for candidates that you know will be an asset to your team. Make it work for both parties.
  2. Focus on Cultural Fit: Assess candidates for cultural fit as well as technical skills. This ensures new hires integrate smoothly into your team.
  3. Invest in Training: Develop comprehensive onboarding and training programs to equip new hires with the necessary skills and knowledge.

Tips for Job Seekers:

  1. Showcase Your Skills: Highlight your skills and experiences that align with the company’s needs. Tailor your CV and cover letter for each application.
  2. Demonstrate Cultural Fit: During interviews, emphasise how your values and work style align with the company’s culture.
  3. Prepare for In-Office Work: Be ready to discuss your adaptability to both hybrid and in-office work environments.
